Some residents asked to post easy and low cost maintenance tips.
Regular cleaning of your sink/tub drains: 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup white vinegar. Pour the baking soda in drain, pour vinegar on top, cover with plug, and let it foam/sit for about 15 minutes. Then flush with a bucket of HOT water and run some more hot water from the tap for a minute or so.
Preventing toilet clogging: Flush/empty water in bowl; pour about 1/4 cup dish liquid soap in toilet bowl; let it sit for about 15 minutes; flush with a bucket of HOT water and flush again a couple of times. The paper and other stuff just flow through.
Keeping garbage disposal working when away for some days: Spray a little bit of WD40 oil through the sink drain to coat the blades/motor. Run motor for 20-25 seconds and just leave. Do not run the water until you are back home.
Safe and economical (home-made) cleaner: 8 ounces of water, 2 ounces of white vinegar, a little bit of dish liquid soap. Put all in a spray bottle and use as needed.
Refrain from throwing anything in the toilets, kitchen/bathroom sinks or shower drains. Discard oil and large chunks of food in the trash.
Paper towels, rags, feminine napkins, dental floss must not be thrown in toilets.
AVOID pouring chemical liquids or powders in the drains. As the pipes are old, the chemicals tend to promote corrosion.
